For only a bit over $100, this router has very flexible options such as firewall rules, site to site VPN, basic web filter, packet inspection, logging and much more. Read on to find out what it has to offer!

Not really, a linksys router will cost you that much and not give you half those options. Though I'm basing that on my old linksys which I bought a few years back, so not sure what they offer now.

I've got one of the newer Linksys ones... however I uploaded firmware from a company called Sveasoft to make the router "better" lol. It added VPN functionality, Virtual LAN's and a whole slew of other features. It more than most likely will void your warranty though. IF that's not a concern, what the hey lol.

Yeah I heard you can do that on linksys routers, but it has to be a specific model and I could not find that one, something I've thought of trying too lol.

If I was very experimental I'd try to write my own firmware lol.

The firmware appears to have some linux elements... so if you can learn to program using PERL you should be all set

Yeah pearl is something worth learning. I'd have to get around to it.

But first I need to try and learn regex by heart at least.

I forgot to mention in this review that every 24 hours this router requires a reboot since it looses it's internet connection. <_<

There's a new firmware out though, so hopefuly the upgrade will fix it.

Well that was pretty much the whole idea behind making a review, showing what the product has to offer and what my level of satisfaction is and wether or not I recomend it.

The 3.0_21 firmware fixed my disconnection problems with normal internet but I have not tried to VPN yet, but I'll post my experience with it once I get it working.

Wow I'll have to edit the review, this router SUCKS. It keeps loosing the connection. I'm probably end up dumping it and going back to the linksys.

Edit: I'm about ready to take out the sludge hammer on this thing, what a POS. I reseted it twice today.

Wow I would definatly want to add that video to the review. I also added at the end the problems with this, and removed the line saying I recomend it, because at first I did until I realized it's crap.

Hmm, if I could get hold of a camera I could film myself doing something as well so we have various destructive videos. We have a nice huge circular saw sitting in the shed, and it happends to be for metal. <_>

I've worked with a sonicwall (TZ170) and it's pretty nice, and it actually works lol.

Had to reboot it again today. What happends it that the response time becomes VERY slow, then it dies. I was searching for stuff on Google and every single link I clicked was VERY slow to load or timed out.

Man I wish I had a video camera so I can film myself trashing it and add the video to the review.

Thanks

wtf how did that get there? That database is read from this topic?!

Stupid bonner pills crap. these people seriously need to be shot to death with a pellet gun.

Hmm that's what happened the spam bot killed it but it stayed in the DB - had to approve it then delete it. Either way, I got his IP (83.237.46.168) now and he's a gonner.

I have not had any issues with mine for a while now. All the stuff on top of it remains in it's raised position, on my junk shelf. :D

Wow so this really is a bad model. :o Everyone, not just me, is having trouble with it. My article at first was all positive about it since it worked great for the first couple of weeks, then it went to crap. That seems to be what happens to everyone.

You'd think netgear would do something about that though. And we can't argue against the fact that it's a good firewall, because hackers will NEVER get past that router, especially if it's down again. :P

Have you thought about the possibility that your ISP could change your IP address each 24 hours like mine does? That would upset your VPN.

Maybe you need a fixed IP address at either end.

well, I have a solution to your problems.

First off, this particular model is a heatpump. The industrial grade versions come with 2x 40mm 25cfm fans. Outside of being loud, it is a solid machine. I personally own one, and Ive never had a problem out of it.

Now to fix the Fvs318 you will need to install some fans. I noticed alot of the problems that you guys are mentioning when i first installed this particular model over a year ago. Cooling it off is your fix. Once you get past that, it really is a sweet router for the money.

unfortunatly I dont quite know where I put the pics for the mod I did on the Netgear FVS318. But, I will try to dig them up and get them posted on here in the next week orso.

Lastly, the VPN problems mentioned,.. Im not pointing fingers or tring to pee in anyone's cheerios but, if your in the buisness of web-enterprise and you use consumer grade equipment, then the only person at fault is yourself. If by now you havnt figured it out, in the computer world, if you didnt pay for it, then you can NOT depend on it. The 318 is a small buisness/consumer grade model. I would personally recomend a cysco or medium grade intel model to be used in comercial and industrial environments.

goodluck, and i'll try to get those pics posted for those of you who are still tring to make your 318 work properly.

Hmm honestly never realized heat could be an issue, and given this problem is so on and off, it makes sense that heat would be the cause. I have a spare 80mm fan I'd have to try out some modding. :D Or I can go with my original plan of turning it into an ethernet cable tester. :D

lol.. that works too.=) Or. if you wanted to indevor into a really tight mod, use its guts on the inside of a nix router box, basically using it a switch that is directly wired into the ethernet of the server.

That sounds like such a good idea. I think Im going to stew on that some.

Hmm or I can turn it into a really expensive looking hub, and a passive hub at that. :D A network admin's worse nightmare.
