In this HD world we live in, having the latest and greatest display in which to fully enjoy this media has become the norm. With every release of a new device, it seems the display is the biggest improvement, with hig her resolutions and more pixels per inch being the specs that consumers cli ng to when deciding one versus another. With such an emphasis on visuals, w e cant afford to overlook the need for high quality speakers to fully enjoy the experience. There are numerous choices out there, and most are X.1 set ups. This is generally some number (i.e. X) of satellite speakers and a sub woofer (aka .1). The traditional 2.0 (no separate subwoofer) market has his torically been saturated with cheap speakersunfortunately that hasnt change d much with the emphasis on X.1 setups. So can a 2.0 speaker system cut it in todays market where so much emphasis is being placed on getting the most out of the HD media and high quality audio that is so readily available th ese days? Palo Alto seems to think so, and with their Cubik speakers they a re here to try and dispel multiple myths. Essentially, bigger isnt always b etter, and more speakers does not mean better sound.

QNAP TS-239 Pro Turbo NAS @ pcreview.co.uk
[Aug-14-09] (0 Comments)

The QNAP TS-239 Pro is a next generation model based on the Intel Atom platform which includes even more features suited to an office environment (such as iSCSI). This NAS includes two drive bays (providing up to 4TB storage) and the unit size has been reduced substantially to a mere 214x175x115mm.This little NAS includes a 1.6Ghz atom CPU, 1GB DDRII memory and two gigabit LAN ports – which is much more powerful than many competing devices. Not only does this improve the performance of some elements (such as the PHP/MySQL server), but it ensures that a larger number of clients can use the NAS without performance degradation. Similar to other QNAP variants there are 12 primary functions which the NAS unit can perform.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 @ pcreview.co.uk
[Apr-07-09] (0 Comments)

The most important component of KIS 2009 is undoubtedly the anti-virus scanner, which is the backbone of protection for any computer. Some of the most comprehensive AV testing is done by a company called AV-Comparatives, which test a variety of scanners against a huge database of viral infections. This is one of the most effective ways of measuring the performance of AV scanners, and provides a much more representative result than personal testing. In the latest test of on-demand AV scanners (Feb 09), Kaspersky is tested alongside 16 other products in their default modes. A 97.1 overall detection rate was achieved, which is roughly a mid-table result – however the number of false positives was significantly lower than many other scanners.

Supermicro X7DWA-N Motherboard @ pcreview.co.uk
[Aug-06-08] (0 Comments)

I had the opportunity to spend some time testing and evaluating this motherboard with two sets of CPUs and two types of memory. First using two X5482 Harpertowns (3200/12mb/1600) and 4x2 gig of Transcend DDR2-800 FB-Dimms, and later on using two E5450 Harpertowns(3000/12mb/1333).This EATX board is built using the newest 5400 Seaburg chipset with 1600FSB support built in. The layout is a typical EATX 12x13” design and like previous versions uses 24, 8 and 4 pin connections to the motherboard. With this new series, a 4 pin Molex connector is added to the board for users with higher power needs. There are 8 Dimm slots for quad channel memory support (up to and including DDR2-800 FB-Dimms) for a maximum of 64 gigs. The board comes boxed with 6 SATA cables, I/O shield, IDE cable, and an excellent manual and Cd with all needed software and drivers.

QNAP TS-209 Pro II @ pcreview.co.uk
[Jul-29-08] (0 Comments)

Many small businesses and advanced home users will use some form of external storage device to backup data or store common files across a network. One of the most convenient methods of doing this is to use a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device, which allows you to access network shares from all other PCs connected to the same network. The QNAP TS-209 Pro II provides space for two SATA hard drives, providing ample storage capacity (for example, 2 x 1TB drives). However this NAS unit isn’t quite as simple as just providing access to storage space, it can do a whole lot more.

Vista Codecs @ pcreview.co.uk
[Jan-29-08] (0 Comments)

The K-Lite Codec pack is the most popular codec pack available at the moment and works flawlessly on Windows Vista. The main benefit of this package is that you can choose the broad type of pack you wish to install (either Basic, Standard or Full). Most users will want to install the standard package, as this should play almost any video file available. If you find a video format that is not supported, it is easy to re-install the full pack at a later date. The full pack is primarily designed for people that need to encode as well as decode (for example, in a movie making package), so is overkill for the vast majority of users.

Two Reviews at The Moditory @ Moditory
[Nov-24-04] (0 Comments)

Today we have a review of two Silverstone Tech products for you
lucky readers; a transfer bracket and 3.5 Front I/O Module. While its
not as flashy as a case, motherboard, or graphics card, these devices are
still very important in the PC industry. Arriving in a slightly beat up
version of our good friend Sir Brown Box, the packages were retrieved
unharmed from their protective cage of cardboard and packing peanuts. At
first site, we got a good impression of these devices. But we must
remember, appearances can be deceiving, and first impressions can be
wrong. So how well do these items really fair in their tasks? Read on and
find out!

Why Opera is better than Mozilla @ IceTeks

There are several reasons why I think Opera is better than Mozilla. These reasons are probably all personal, but hey, I can't help that. First and foremost, I like that Opera comes with a lot more features...

Mushkin PC-3200 Level II V2 (2-2-2-5) Memory reviewed @ Hi-Techreviews.com
[Sep-30-04] (0 Comments)

Every since the Winbond BH-5 chips became as scarce as hens teeth computer enthusiasts have been on the lookout for any memory that would approach the BH-5 claimed speeds. Earlier this year with the release of the Samsung TCCD chip it became evident that there was a new player in town as far as low latency memory was concerned. Not one to sit on the sidelines Mushkin immediately started designing a replacement memory module to take the place of the discontinued Level II memory and came up with the new PC-3200 Level 2 Version 2 (2-2-2) memory. After seeing our benchmarks I think you will agree that this is some blazing fast memory.

[Sep-30-04] (0 Comments)

As with anything else, trends in computer cases come and go. As the whole modding scene took off, we saw beige tin cans replaced with hulking great black boxes which were judged solely on the number of cooling fans they could accommodate. Lian Li started the craze for all things aluminium and the last couple of years have seen the rise of cheap pre-modded cases in every garish colour imaginable.

Micro Cool NorthPole chipset heatsink review. @ a1-electronics.net
[Sep-30-04] (0 Comments)

We do not have a catalogue of chipset heatsinks tests to compare this Micro Cool NorthPole with but have to say that the fan worked very well even at only 4.5 volts giving a surprising steady flow of air through the heatsink.
We can only whole heartily recommend this excellent Micro Cool NorthPole chipset heatsink and all the other heatsinks for anybody looking for what must be the best chipset heatsink.

IANAG Security Tweaking App updated @ I Am Not A Geek
[Sep-28-04] (0 Comments)

I've modified the layout a bit and improved the documentation considerably. The
registry backup/restore tool has been greatly improved and a couple oddball settings
were added since the last version. Overall this build is quite a bit more "polished"
than previous builds. It's been nearly 2 months since my last release and I'm back
to workin on software. My Performance Tweaking application is back on track for a
first release in the not too distant future.

Eumax 9-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Genie @ Viper Lair
[Sep-28-04] (0 Comments)

Having a memory card reader can be quite useful. Being able to not only have the
reader installed in your computer to cut down on desk clutter as well as take it on
the road can be very useful. The Flash Genie is such a product; it is an awesome
9-in-1 card reader as well as a portable device.

ATI Radeon X300 Reference PCI Express Videocard Review @ Tweaknews
[Sep-28-04] (0 Comments)

What I will be stating is that if you are moving to the new Intel LGA775 specification or the new Athlon64 PCI Express motherboard and you just need a basic 2D videocard, the X300 based alternatives on the market will make you more than happy. If you are even considering gaming, do yourself a favor and upgrade to an X600 if you want some decent playable framerates on any of the more recent or newly released games on the market.

Windows XP Performance Tweaking Guide @ I Am Not A Geek
[Sep-28-04] (0 Comments)

It's been more than 3 months since our last update so we figured it was about time
to update this guide again. We've been busy focusing on spyware type stuff but This
guide is by FAR the most popular article we've ever posted so we will continue
working on it and update it as needed. SP2 didn't really bring any big changes to
this guide.

Razer eXact Mat MousePad Review @ Twisted Mods
[Sep-28-04] (0 Comments)

If youre searching for the best mouse surface out there you wont be disappointed with the Razer eXact Mat. Its a large area to move your mouse on, its constructed of anodized aluminum, it has very good rubber grips to anchor it down to your desk, and its much easier to change sides than the fUnc 1030 because you just flip the whole mat. The mouse glides over both sides exceptionally, especially if your mouse has Teflon feet. The pad feels solid and natural, and the aluminum trim does not bother your hand or wrist at all...

MSI K8T Neo2-FIR @ Viper Lair
[Sep-28-04] (0 Comments)

The only thing really keep us from getting overly excited is the lack of native
SATA, and the inability to run 4 x double sided ram at 400MHz.. All the other issues
are really minor, and doesn't change the fact that MSI put together a good, solid

SuperTalent PC3500 Memory Review @ GruntVillE
[Sep-28-04] (0 Comments)

The stock speeds of the SuperTalent RAM were more than acceptable when compared to
the Crucial 4000. Scoring right behind the Crucial, the SuperTalent RAM has an
excellent score at Stock speeds. Of course, when overclocked, the Crucial 4000 comes
out on top. Once again, you can see the benefit that Dual Channel RAM provides. The
SuperTalent wallops the single stick of Geil.

Shareaza - a better Peer to peer program @ IceTeks
[Sep-13-04] (0 Comments)

With the RIAA terrorists crashing into file sharing, attacking Napster,
Morpheus, KaZaA.... file sharing seems to have collapsed since then. Not to mention
that allot of P2P programs now have spyware in them. Well Shareaza comes to the
rescue and rebuilds the file sharing community! It is a great spyware-free program
that will make P2P stronger.

New Moditory Review: SeaSonic PowerAngel @ Moditory
[Sep-03-04] (0 Comments)

This must of been inspired by one of our latest articles on testing wattage consuption of equipment, and is probably more accurate.

"The Seasonic Power Angel gives you the unique ability to check up
on the power consumption of anything which connects to an outlet. Want to
find out how much that power supply is really sucking from your wall?
Perhaps you suspect a faulty appliance is making your electric bill sky
high or are suspicious of your power providers math proficiency. Then
again, perhaps you just want to settle a dispute over how much power the
TV clock consumes when it's powered off. Whether the prize is bragging
rights or a lower monthly bill, the Power Angel allows you to check up on
power and how much your household appliances are using."

What is spyware? @ IceTeks
[Jul-04-04] (0 Comments)

Spyware is a malicious piece of code that attaches itself to your operating system, modifies operating system files or/and otherwise runs stand alone and does nasty things to your computer. It comes bundled with software such as KaZaA and Gator.

Big Brother and Ndisuio.sys @ IceTeks
[Jun-26-04] (0 Comments)

Ndisuio.sys, a very mysterious system file is present in Windows XP and is a driver for wireless things such as wi-fi and bluetooth. However, there have been many issues with this file downloading immense amounts of data and perhaps causing activity that is "big brother"ish.

SquirrelBBS - new BBS system coming soon @ IceTeks
[Jun-12-04] (0 Comments)

SquirrelBBS will be developed by me on my spare time, however, my main goal is to always keep it free, and make it so everyone can use it how they want. There will be very little restrictions on it's use.

IPB has inspired me to do this project as the direction they are going indicates that they will soon go fee-based, and it is sad to see a good BBS system go in the water like that. However, my plan is not to go against IPB and copy them exactly or rip them off, but simply offer an alternative to those who don't want to pay or see the word TRIAL written all over their own site.

Past day site problems @ IceTeks

Trendware 2 port KVM switch review @ IceTeks
[Mar-14-04] (0 Comments)

Are you in a situation where you need to control more then one PC, but don't have room for a keyboard, mouse and monitor for each one? If yes, there's a solution. A KVM switch will enable you to switch from one PC to the other, using the same keyboard, monitor and mouse. In this review, we will look at a 2 port KVM switch that I bought for my business, and realized it was very good, and even worth reviewing.

48H+ Major downtime @ IceTeks
[Jan-19-04] (0 Comments)

We were down for over 2 days starting January 17th at around 4:00am to around 5:00PM of January 19th. This is because there was a spammer abusing the server so the server provider (not the host) decided it would be brilliant to shut down the server and not turn it back on!

Unfortunatly all news posted before this new system are no longer in the database as it was not really worth writting a converter for one-time use, but this change will make things better for both viewers, news submitters, and tech sites to which the news links to.
